A revision plan should make GCSE Maths feel more manageable, not turn every evening into a battle over textbooks. For many pupils, the difficulty is not a lack of effort. They may be unsure where to begin, spend too long on topics they already know, or lose confidence when a harder question appears. This guide to GCSE maths revision planning will help parents and carers create a routine that is realistic, targeted and calm.

The best plans are not necessarily the fullest. They give a child enough regular practice to improve while leaving room for schoolwork, activities, rest and the occasional difficult week. GCSE success is built through steady recall, careful correction and growing confidence with exam-style questions.

Start with an honest picture of where they are

Before filling in a timetable, find out what your child genuinely needs to revise. Begin with their most recent school assessment, marked homework and teacher feedback. These often show more clearly than a general feeling of being "behind" whether the main issue is algebra, fractions, geometry, ratio or interpreting problem-solving questions.

Ask your child which topics they avoid and which they find comfortable. Their answers matter, but should be balanced with evidence. A pupil may say they are poor at maths when they actually need more practice with a small number of foundational skills. Equally, a child who feels confident may be relying on familiar questions and need more challenge.

It also helps to check their GCSE tier and exam board. Foundation and Higher papers require different levels of depth, and the wording and layout of questions can vary between boards. Revision should be matched to the papers they will sit, particularly as the examinations get closer.

A useful starting point is to group topics into three simple categories: secure, developing and priority. Secure topics still need occasional retrieval practice, but they should not take most of the revision time. Developing topics need guided practice, while priority topics need to be revisited regularly from the basics upwards.

Build a GCSE maths revision plan that can last

A detailed timetable that demands two hours of maths every night may look impressive, but it is unlikely to survive for long. A more dependable approach is to plan three or four focused maths sessions each week, then increase this gradually during school holidays or the final weeks before exams if your child is coping well.

For most pupils, 30 to 45 minutes of concentrated work is more valuable than a long session interrupted by a mobile phone, tiredness or frustration. Younger teenagers and pupils with attention or processing difficulties may do better with two shorter blocks and a proper break between them. There is no benefit in continuing once errors are multiplying because they are exhausted.

Give each session one clear job

Every revision session should have a purpose. “Revise algebra” is too broad and can lead to drifting between videos, notes and random questions. “Practise solving two-step linear equations and correct mistakes” gives a pupil a clear finish line.

A balanced weekly pattern might include one session to revisit a priority topic, one to practise a developing topic, one to complete mixed questions, and one shorter session to review errors from the week. This prevents the common problem of revising a topic once, ticking it off and forgetting it a fortnight later.

Keep the plan visible, whether it is on paper, a wall calendar or a simple digital document. Parents can help by agreeing when revision will happen, but it is usually better for the pupil to have some choice over the order of topics. A degree of ownership makes it easier to maintain the routine.

Prioritise understanding before speed

GCSE Maths includes a wide range of content, but many difficulties trace back to a smaller group of essential skills. Fractions, decimals, percentages, negative numbers, ratio, algebraic manipulation and basic number facts appear repeatedly across the course. If these foundations are shaky, more advanced work can feel needlessly confusing.

When your child gets a question wrong, encourage them not to simply copy the correct answer. They need to identify what caused the error. Did they misread the question? Forget a method? Make an arithmetic mistake? Use the wrong formula? This distinction is valuable because each problem needs a different response.

A revision notebook or error log can be very effective. For each mistake, pupils can record the topic, the question type, what went wrong and one corrected example. Over time, this becomes a personal list of what to revisit. It is far more useful than repeatedly completing questions they can already answer with ease.

Speed does matter in an exam, but it should come after understanding. A child who rushes through calculations without a reliable method will often lose marks that they could have gained. First aim for accurate working, then practise applying that method more efficiently.

Use active practice, not just reading

Reading a revision guide or watching an explanation can be helpful at the beginning of a topic, especially if a method has been forgotten. However, maths improves through doing. Pupils need to retrieve methods from memory, write out working and make decisions about which process a question requires.

A productive session might begin with a few short questions from a previously studied topic, followed by focused practice on the main target. Finish with one or two mixed or exam-style questions. This helps pupils move beyond recognising a method when it is labelled and towards selecting it independently.

Encourage full working, even if your child believes they can do the calculation mentally. Method marks are important in GCSE Maths, and written steps make it much easier to spot where an error occurred. They also give teachers or tutors something useful to discuss when support is needed.

Calculators should be used appropriately rather than avoided. Pupils need confidence with both calculator and non-calculator skills. They should know how to enter fractions, powers, brackets and standard form correctly, and they should estimate an answer first where possible. An implausible calculator answer is often a sign that a key has been pressed incorrectly.

Introduce past papers at the right time

Past papers are valuable, but they are most useful when used with a purpose. Completing a full paper too early can be discouraging if large areas of content have not yet been covered. At that stage, selected exam questions by topic are often a better choice.

As the exam period approaches, full papers become increasingly important. They teach pupils how to manage time, read unfamiliar wording and keep going when a question looks difficult. Marking should be part of the process, not an afterthought. A paper completed but never reviewed provides much less benefit than one where mistakes are understood and revisited.

For timed practice, encourage your child to attempt questions in a sensible order. If they become stuck, they can mark the question, move on and return later. Spending ten minutes on one difficult problem may prevent them from reaching several accessible marks elsewhere.

How parents can support without taking over

Parents do not need to remember GCSE algebra to be helpful. The most valuable support is often practical and emotional: protecting a regular revision time, providing a quiet space, noticing effort and helping a child respond calmly to setbacks.

Try questions such as, “What are you practising today?” or, “What did you find difficult, and what is your next step?” These invite reflection without turning revision into an interrogation. Praise specific behaviours, including returning to a tricky topic, showing working clearly or correcting an error independently.

It is sensible to keep an eye on progress, particularly if motivation is low, but avoid checking every answer. Too much supervision can make a capable pupil feel that they are revising for an adult rather than for themselves. If arguments about maths are becoming frequent, an experienced tutor can provide a neutral, structured space for explanation and practice.

Adjust the plan when it is not working

A revision plan is a working document, not a promise that must be followed perfectly. If a topic takes longer than expected, move other sessions rather than rushing. If school sets a major assessment, allow the plan to reflect it. If your child is unwell, overwhelmed or facing a busy week, reduce the workload and restart calmly.

Watch for signs that the plan needs changing. These may include repeatedly avoiding revision, completing work with little concentration, becoming anxious before every session or making the same errors despite lots of questions. Sometimes the answer is more practice, but sometimes it is a need for clearer teaching, smaller steps or extra support with confidence.

The aim is not for your child to say that maths is easy every day. It is for them to recognise that difficult questions can be approached one step at a time. With a realistic routine, well-chosen practice and support that builds independence, GCSE revision can become a steady process of progress rather than a last-minute source of worry.
