They help pupils remember key methods, spot where their understanding breaks down and build the confidence to begin a question independently.
For parents, this is often the frustrating part. Your child may say they have revised, but a low mark or an unfinished homework task suggests that the learning has not yet settled. A calmer, more structured routine can make a genuine difference, whether a pupil is preparing for SATs, the 11+, a school assessment or GCSE Maths.
Why maths needs a different revision approach
Maths is a subject built on connected knowledge. If times tables, fractions or negative numbers are insecure, later topics can feel far more difficult than they need to be. Reading through a textbook may make a method look familiar, but familiarity is not the same as being able to use it without help.
Effective revision therefore needs active practice. A pupil should regularly retrieve information from memory, choose an appropriate method and explain their thinking. This is how they move from, “I understand it when someone shows me”, to, “I know how to do this myself”.
